Best Memory of Gary

Most recently, I remember when my parents and I were out in Arizona for his rehab. It was the day that he was going to tell us the things we did that hurt him which was a very scary and emotional day. We were not supposed to have any contact with him at all, but before the session that day my brother got my attention and tossed me a bracelet he had bought me. It read FEAR NOT. He knew I was worried and just wanted to let me know there was nothing to be scared about. When we got to the session my brother did not have one bad thing to say to me. He just told me that I was the best sister he could have asked for and that he loved me. I had not worn my bracelet in months but the day my brother died before I found out in the morning, I went into my jewelry box and put it on randomly. When the police came to our door, I had on my bracelet and it was like my brother was telling me again not to fear… that he was alright.:

In high school, Gary somehow convinced his father to let us build an ice rink in their front yard. The ironic thing is that there was a perfectly good pond just 20 feet away! Gary always thought “big” and had the ability to get everyone else excited about his ideas, too.

We were in Keystone, Colorado and we must have been around 10 years old at the time. We were on one of our many family vacations skiing. Our families decided to take a break from the slopes and we went ice skating. My sisters constantly joked with both of us about being boyfriend and girlfriend, not just for this vacation but every time we were together. They wanted us so bad to kiss each other… I guess they saw an opportunity to push us together so we would kiss and they did just that. We laughed about that vacation every time we were together. The innocence of a child should never be taken from them. When you can remember times like this one and smile because you remember the exact feeling you experienced in that moment, you realize how special a memory can be.

Gary was the first person I met to sign include his “#2” with his signature…and that was in 5th grade!
Others include Gary betting me that my tongue would stick to the frozen metal pole…I lost that one. The best part was trying to watch him out of the corner of my eye as he was rolling on the ground from laughing so hard…and my tongue was stuck to the pole. Also, in High School, he was the first person in North America to make a car stereo speaker out of duct tape.

Gary inviting my oldest daughter, Jen, (who was then about five years old) to his back yard so she could play on his awesome swing set. Not only did she get introduced to all of his unbelievable backyard gadgets and toys, but he also gave her a straw cowboy hat as a reward for her visit to his home. At age 7, he understood that rewarding desired behavior works for both dogs and humans. He was one of the most natural salesman and capitalists I have ever known.
